The memorial service at the funeral home or church, along with expenses of internment ranges from $2500 to $7000 dollars on average for a traditional service with viewing, or a memorial service.

Often, if you plan ahead of time, you can get a quote from a funeral home, in writing, and have the amount you will pay pre-planned. Often they will attempt to get you to prepay, which can be a mistake. Most funeral homes employ or have partnerships with insurance agents, and sometimes the policy they offer or use is not the best available option.

Cremation

Cremation ranges in expense from $350 to $500 dollars, plus the cost of memorial and casket choice. While cremation is much less expensive, the often overlooked cost of casket and memorial are not included.

A cemetary plot can range in price from $3500 dollars, up to $10,000. A plot may not be necessary if cremation is chosen, and burial on private property is also sometimes an allowed choice, depending on state. Mausoleums are typically less expensive, in the $2000 to $3000 range.

A simple plaque or headstone is commonly used at the burial site, and they can range in cost from $200 or $300 dollars for a simple plaque, up to $4000 or more for a larger stone with custom engraving. You could have one or the other or both present at the grave site.

The cost of transport and burial ranges from around $300 to $500 depending on area of the country.

If cremation is not chosen, the $400 average will be added to the estimate.

Social Security Death Benefits

A one time payment of $255 is made as a survivors benefit to the spouse or surviving children. This amount is grossly inadequate for any burial option, including cremation. Military Death Benefits

For non service related death, the VA typically pays $700 toward burial and funeral expenses, and a $700 plot-interment allowance.
